Stories That I've Written

Written by Xavier Tyler

Being someone who is interested in joining the military and having previous family members serve, I find it hard to accept that we’re just abruptly pulling out of Syria and then going back in to protect oil fields. Just to protect oil fields.

I understand that if the oil falls into the hands of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, (ISIL),  it’ll just fuel their plans and operations (no pun intended). I also understand that we do need to get our soldiers out of the middle east but I think we should do it in a different way. We have gradually brought down the amount of United States soldiers in Afghanistan from 100,000 in 2011 to about 2,300 in 2019. I think its quite possible to do the same for Syria.

In 2018, we had 2,000 soldiers deployed in Syria, Trump pulled 1,000 of those soldiers out. Left with only 1,000 soldiers, Trump decided to take the remaining soldiers out of Syria and then put them back in just for the oil fields.

In 2011 there were only about 10,000-15,000 Syrian refugees at the Turkish borders. As of 2017, that number has grown to 11.5 million people, almost half of those refugees are children. Imagine being forced to leave your home and move somewhere else or become homeless so that you could avoid the threat of being bombed or caught in the crossfire. These people live under constant fear of being under attack or not having a place to sleep. Not to mention that its hard to get food or clean water for these people and families.

American soldiers help bring hope to these people. Since Trump has taken the soldiers out of Syra in October 2019, the Kurdish people have felt betrayed and have felt that their efforts have been for nothing.  11,600-12,580+ Kurdish fighters have died for the United States to fight ISIL. These soldiers believed that the United States would help them become an independent state from Syria, Turkey, and parts of Iran.
